The Nice Guy’s Guide to Meeting Women in Curitiba (Brazil)

Curitiba, in the southern state of Parana, is one of the 10 largest cities in Brazil. Yet it’s off the tourist radar. Most travelers would simply go to Florianopolis, Iguazu Falls, and obviously Rio de Janeiro. But my gut feeling told me to give this city a shot, and I was not disappointed.

As soon as I arrived in Curitiba, I was surprised to find an advanced, clean city with a European feel. Plus green parks, advanced bus public transport, and good inexpensive food (at the Churrascarias). Moreover, unlike many other places in Brazil, daygame is pretty good. The women can be very attractive as well.

Curitiba Women

Demographics

The women in Curitiba have a very large proportion of European descendance. This includes originating countries like Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Portugal, and Italy (but also Japan). In the less well-off neighborhoods, you are likely to find more indigenous Brazilians.

The Germans migrated specifically to the south of Brazil, because it was easier to adapt to the colder climate. Curitiba is the one city in Brazil that definitely can get cold in the winter, unlike e.g. Rio de Janeiro that’s pretty much hot throughout the year.

Sexy girls, but take note…

Lookswise, women are often very attractive in Southern Brazilian cities like Curitiba – in good shape, and with German resemblances. While Sao Paulo, for example, has more Italian-looking women. But what’s the catch?

In Curitiba, the girls are more closed off to social interaction, and more introverted. It’s a colder city with colder people. Personality wise, the best women in Curitiba are from outside Curitiba.

I met a girl while daygaming who shared my views. Locals are too cold for her as well, as she ponders moving to Florianopolis – a friendlier place. The beach brings out friendlier vibes in everyone. Besides, at Florianopolis there are more tourists and Brazilians from other parts of the country, open to social interaction. The cold, unfriendly vibes you often get in Curitiba, generally applies to the whole South, including Porto Alegre.

So on the one hand, you have very hot local girls, especially in upmarket neighborhoods like Batel, Merces, and even in Centro. But to cancel this out, these girls are less open to cold approach than in other parts of Brazil. In addition, there’s more fear of slut-shaming in the South.

The bright side is that women open up and become friendlier at night while consuming alcohol.

Curitiba Nightlife

You won’t get bored spending a weekend in Curitiba. There are three very good upmarket nightlife areas: Vicente Machado, Shopping Hauer, and Batel. The great thing about these locations is that its mostly standing streetgame. Thus its more dynamic than any seated area could ever be.

How did I find out about these nightlife areas? My hostel (mentioned further below) recommended Avenida Vicente Machado. On the other hand, a daygame girl (who I met at Rua XV November) told me about Shopping Hauer. Next, during some mid-week action at Shopping Hauer, a nightgame girl tells me about Batel’s nightlife. Thus one thing leads to another.

Similar to some European cities, the girls’ friends in Curitiba will often try to cockblock you. They’re not going to make much effort to befriend you. Although the women are friendlier while drinking, many will still be unreceptive to your approach. Moreover, it’s not as easy to take a girl home in the South of Brazil (as it is more North). But getting make-outs is relatively simple and straight-forward.

The guys in Curitiba are usually friendly at night to foreigners as well. Potentially because they don’t get many tourists. Thus make a solid attempt to meet an extra wing this way if they speak English. Of course, meeting wings get you in the party mindset as well, which is great for picking up girls.

Another observation is that I only ever meet Brazilian girls in Curitiba’s nightlife, and only very rarely girls from other countries (especially not from outside Latin America).

So …many girls are drinking, and these girls are more open to being approached. Now let’s investigate the 3 main nightlife areas.

Avenida Vicente Machado

In this party street, you’ll find a block or two with many bars and nightclubs. Apart from the streetgame in front of the bars, you’ll find a few upmarket dance nightclubs like +55 and Slainte. At these clubs, the crowd is young and under 25.

Names of bars and take-out joints to look out for in Vicente Machado include: Bar do Durva, Don Kebab, Aurora Bar, Pizza CWB, Juke Bar, Roots chips & beer, etc. For the streetgame over here, you’ll find a variety of different ages, as it’s not only a student streetgame area.

Yet I should mention, that during my most recent visit to Curitiba, the streetgame nightlife seemed to have moved away from Vicente Machado to Shopping Hauer. Still, I would go to Vicente Machado first, see if there’s anything going on. If not, I simply keep on walking to Shopping Hauer.

Shopping Hauer Party Street

My favorite nightgame area in Curitiba is the bars around Shopping Hauer (Cel. Dulcidio street). Yet I should mention that these bars mostly attract a very young student crowd. Along with the beer, there is also quality streetfood available.

If I wanted to go out every night in Curitiba, I’d go to Shopping Hauer. Because it’s the place where you are most likely to find a few girls to talk to. However, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays can be difficult. For example, on a Monday night, there was one table with three girls. Not much, but I could do an approach. If I stayed another hour or two, maybe there would’ve been another attractive girl or two lingering around.

If like me, you prefer the busy times, then you should definitely come here from Thursday to Saturday night. At least when it’s not heavily raining. Like Vicente Machado, it’s a standing, outside streetgame area.

Furthermore, Casarao Haunted House is a fun, nice club right next to Shopping Hauer. It’s only open once (or maximum twice) a week (check beforehand if it’s open). I went there on a Friday night. There’s a small dance floor, and also a decent outside area where you can have conversations. It’s a good place to go if you want to avoid the student crowd at Shopping Hauer’s bars. Girls here tend to be talkative, and receptive. The entrance fee was R$40. Expensive but worth it.

Batel Upmarket Nightlife

In Batel the crowd tends to be older than at Shopping Hauer. Expect to mostly meet women older than 24.

An exception is the country music dance hall, Shed (age range: 19 to 25). However, since I’m not into this kinda music, I can’t recommend it. Present your student card at the entrance for a nice discount off the overpriced entrance fee (R$40). Alcohol is also expensive.

Next, I checked out Sheridan’s Irish pub. It’s a mediocre game environment. But good for meeting an older girl (over 25). Still, the friendliest girls at this bar were visiting from other Brazilian cities (e.g. Belo Horizonte, Vitoria and Rio de Janeiro). The entrance fee was R$15.

If I go back to Curitiba, I’ll also try Santa Marta bar in Batel. There was a small line on a Sunday night, albeit it was St Patrick’s Weekend. Once again, expect an older crowd of 27 years or more. Friday’s and Saturdays are likely to be quite busy. This Batel nightlife area is in Bpo. Dom Jose Street.

If you’re into older women (potentially MILFs), I recommend the small Crossroads Bar not far away in another part of Batel (only during weekends).’

Curitiba Daygame

I have mixed feelings about daygaming in Curitiba. You’re about to find out why.

When it comes to having cute girls all around you to approach, during the daytime, Curitiba is the best city in Brazil. Curitiba is potentially the only Brazilian city where you can see cute, educated, European-looking girls walking outside all the time. More specifically, within the middle-class to upmarket areas.

However, the catch is that the women are often too conservative and closed-off, and less sexual than other Brazil cities. During daygame, although the girls are usually friendly, they’re not as receptive to giving their phone numbers out to gringos.

If you are fluent in Portuguese, you should have more luck. For example, I approached local girls who don’t speak English with my broken Portuguese. Initially, I sense some excitement from the girl, but the language barrier has the final say.

Nevertheless, the best thing that can happen while daygaming in Curitiba, is when you randomly approach a girl who is not from Curitiba. They’ll be more warm and welcoming of your cold approach. It doesn’t matter if you go direct or indirect. You’ll get more or less the same responses.

But what you need here is more the skill of spotting girls who look like they aren’t locals.

Also, you should play a large numbers game with the local girls. This is one of those places where you truly need to do 20 to 30 approaches to get positive results. But it may easily end up being 50 approaches, due to the language barrier, as most women are not very familiar with English.

There are plenty of Shopping Malls in Curitiba where you can try your luck. Plus a good tip is to go to the pedestrian street, Rua XV November (See my map at the bottom of this post). It’s a poorer part of town, but pedestrian streets are usually decent for getting in a few approaches. Yet, in Curitiba, daygame is “good” almost everywhere in the city, so I definitely don’t want to constrain you to only one pedestrian street.

The only exception: Daygame is quiet during weekends. Because the shops in the city are closed. So nobody walks around outside. Definitely try the malls instead on weekends. This includes: Shopping Mueller, PatioBatel Shopping, and ParkShopping Barigui.

During the week, restaurants are only open for lunch, and the food is quite cheap. So there is continuously good foot-flow during the day to and from these restaurants (one potential explanation for Curitiba’s daygame).

Yet, as mentioned, daygame was difficult due to both the language barrier and the closed-off culture. If I was fluent in Portugues, I would probably have had some daygame success. But instead, my success in Curitiba came from Online dating and Nightgame.

Online Dating

Although I’ve had good online dates in Curitiba, it’s not the easiest city in Brazil for online game for all the above-mentioned reasons. In Curitiba, it’s better to have a little more time to follow up leads from the apps, to get these girls out on dates. Yet it can definitely be done with time and logistics. However, if you’re only coming for 2 or 3 days, then rather get outside and focus on the interesting day and nightgame.

Bumble was very quiet, and not really worth downloading in Curitiba. Tinder had more options, and a lot of attractive girls (as in most large cities). However, I also gave Happn a shot before I left, and it seemed as good as Tinder. In fact, I preferred Happn towards the end of my stay.

Also give BrazilianCupid (create a free account here) a shot, as its one of the highest rated CupidMedia dating apps. This very specialized app will allow you to meet and date girls throughout Brazil, including Curitiba.

Curitiba Attractions

Apart from all the above recommendations, also check out the following:

Praca Osorio

This is a central green square, surrounded by a few good restaurants to grab lunch e.g. Restaurante Alameda Grill (all you can eat buffet). In fact, I consider this to be the heart and center of Curitiba during the daytime (see main photo above). It connects the upmarket neighborhoods with the poorer areas of the city.

Oscar Niemeyer Museum

Barcelona has Gaudi, and Brazil has Oscar Niemeyer. Still, I only spent one hour at Niemeyer’s museum, since I’m not deeply into his art and architecture. The museum gives a discount on student cards.

Park Barigui

This is a green park that’s good for a jog or a stroll and picnic with a girlfriend. Still, it’s not that central, and not essential for tourists.

Accommodation

During my first two visits to Curitiba, I stayed at the Knock Knock hostel. Both times, it was very easy to meet a wing within the hostel (who was also keen to go out). The 4 or 5-bed dorm was spacious and had good single beds (not bunk beds). The hostel is in the upmarket Merces Neighborhood, close to Av Vicente Machado. Unless you stay in a hostel, it’s harder to meet wings and other travelers in Curitiba. Because it’s not really a touristic city.

For transport, 99Taxi is a cheap ride-sharing app for getting around in Curitiba.

The city is very close to Sao Paulo by bus (6 hours).

Conclusion

If you are a single guy, Curitiba could be a fun place to live. Staying in an upmarket neighborhood will feel similar to living in Europe. Moreover, food and accommodation are cheaper than in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. For seduction, it’s better than Porto Alegre. But worse than Sao Paulo.

It’s one of the few Brazilian cities that experience a genuine winter. Thus if it’s raining outside, there won’t be as great daygame. Plus, the summer nightgame with everyone standing outside and drinking is something to experience. Thus, in the winter, you basically miss out on the best aspects of living in Curitiba. The daygame and outside nightgame.

In conclusion, visit Curitiba in the summer (+- 4 to 7 days) to get a unique experience of life in Brazil’s South.

  1. Very well written article. It resonates with what one of my Brazilian friend told me. Curtibia girls are generally shy and introvert. This makes them a little cold. Also yes, it generally takes more dates than average to make them comfortable with you.
    But I have one question.
Are the people in South racist ? Many of my Brazilian friends have voiced their concern over this. And if yes, then are they racist to white people (who don’t share their ancestry) as well ? I am not black but not as white as you.

    • Thanks. Yes, that’s correct.

I haven’t heard anyone in Brazil say anything racist. Generally, I have experienced Brazil as a country without racism. For example, there are many mixed-race couples, who also get married, and have children, etc. From my own viewpoint, I would tell you not to worry about racism. I’d rather be concerned about pick-pocketing, and crime in general, especially at night. Worrying about racism, in Brazil, would be like a vegetarian man or girl, living in a favela, who worries more about eating chicken or beef, instead of worrying about crime. It’s the wrong thing to worry about in Brazil.

Plus, in the South, there are also many color shades (thus different races). If you dress nicely to fit in with the crowds, people don’t care about your race. But if you’re a white man who dresses like a vagrant, then they will disrespect you, in the same way as if you’re a black man with terrible clothes. It’s not about the skin color, it’s about the way you present yourself.
