The Nice Guy’s Guide to Meeting Women in Amsterdam (Netherlands)

I’ve been to Amsterdam a handful of times, but rarely stay long. It’s an expensive city, without comfortable accommodation options in the city center. Nevertheless, it’s a nice place to check out every once in a while. With each visit, there is usually a new legal high to try out, which excludes banging a hooker in the Red light district. A new wing to meet in the “PUA” or Seduction scene. An interesting Couchsurfing Hangouts meetup. Or other (mis)adventures with local women. Overall, it’s a very touristic city with mediocre nightlife.

Amsterdam Women

Dutch girls are the tallest women in the world. Obesity is uncommon due to an active lifestyle (including a lot of cycling), and a relatively healthy diet. In the Netherlands everyone speaks English very well, but with the familiar Dutch twang accent. Overall, a good stereotype for Dutch women is thin (yet not anorexic), tall, blonde, and attractive.

Amsterdam women are also not shy sexually, and they’re usually very comfortable with nudity (it’s how they are raised). Thus whenever there are Dutch girls traveling in your country, they are great candidates for going skinny dipping after a few beers. Most of these girls like to party and drink. A negative is that they are not exactly as feminine as the women in Eastern Europe (e.g. Belgrade). Don’t be surprised seeing Dutch girls gulping down their beers, being direct about their (lack of) feelings to you, while also continuously postponing having children.

Amsterdam Daygame

Amsterdam is a very multi-cultural and touristic city. It’s not like Belgrade where there are hot Serbian women walking around outside all the time. A lot of the girls you’ll meet are from other countries. For daygame I’d go to Utrecht instead. Or move away from the touristic heart of Amsterdam, around the Red Light district, if you wanna meet dutch girls instead of foreigners and tourists. Generally, Dutch women are friendly, although less so than in Helsinki.

Especially do some daygame after 5 pm in the week when women are done at work, and everything is reasonably chilled outside. During Summer holidays, it can get quite busy during the day. Otherwise, it’s relatively quiet in the daytime during the week in central Amsterdam. But there’ll always be a few tourists. Weekends are decent throughout the year.

Amsterdam Online Dating

Logistics can be a problem for online dating. Since accommodation is very expensive and hard to come by, the women themselves don’t always have the best logistics. Similarly, as a visitor to Amsterdam, cheap Airbnb’s are non-existent in the heart of the city. A good idea may be to split an Airbnb with a good friend, so you will have a central location where you can close online dates. Staying in a hostel in central Amsterdam will keep you near the action. However, it would make you dependent on the girl’s logistics, if you’d want to hook up after a date.

Competition in online dating is quite strong. Dutch men dress very well (since they can afford to). Plus they are tall, well-built, and even the low-class jobs pay quite well. As a foreigner, you can have fun dates and you’ll get matches with a good profile. Yet having mentioned the above obstacles, including logistics, it’s simply not the easiest city for online dating. On the plus side, there are a lot of attractive girls to swipe in Amsterdam on Tinder. Thus the numbers are in your favor if you stay long enough.

Also consider Victoria Milan – it’s often recommended in European cities like Amsterdam. But you can use it to date girls in other parts of the world as well. I registered a free profile and noticed many attractive girls in the Netherlands.

If you speak Dutch, I recommend checking out our Dutch Online Dating Comparison Tool. We highlight a few of the best dating sites in Netherlands, depending on your “purpose” for dating 😉 Unfortunately, if you don’t know any Dutch, the tool won’t be helpful.

Amsterdam Nightgame

I didn’t like the bad gender ratio in Amsterdam. Thus as far as nightlife goes, it’s definitely not one of the top 10 cities in Europe. Plus, in some of the upmarket clubs, face control and discrimination at the door is a given. Thus don’t stand in a long line in front of the wrong club – you may be wasting your time.

De School is one of the most popular Amsterdam nightclubs, often recommended by locals. However, they don’t want to be seen as another tourist club. Thus the doorman can question you about the night’s line-up. This is to make sure you have a genuine interest in the DJ’s, and that you’re not only a foreigner looking for a random place to party (“face control”).

Go to Cafe de Paris, it’s one of the most decent bar-clubs, with better gender ratio. However, don’t try to enter in a group of more than 2 (or max 3) guys, at the same time. Like at most other clubs in Amsterdam, large male groups will get refused entry. (Thus split up, then wait for 5 to 10 minutes, and enter as a second separate group).

Leidseplein has a street full of bars and clubs (e.g. Club Candela), But it’s not high-quality clubbing. I went there as part of a pub crawl, and it wasn’t the best place.

Rembrandtplein is a better option than Leidseplein. For example, there is Cocos Outback. Entry fee is 3 euros. At times when it gets really busy, they won’t allow you in as a single guy. You’d have to bring a woman along to help with the gender ratio. I suggest sweet talking a girl off the street to help you get inside. However, on a Friday in October, it was quite empty inside. If you are willing to pay 18 euros, you could try Escape Club. Considering the lack of other quality options, it may be worth checking out. Otherwise, small clubs like Club Prime will have one or two approach opportunities.

The Red Light district is not a nightgame neighborhood. There are plenty of sit down bars but also a very bad gender ratio. Logically, there will be plenty of male sex tourists (keen on paying 50 Euros per “bang”, instead of learning social skills). Thus apart from seeing the Red Light District as a tourist attraction for an hour or two, don’t waste time in this area at night.

Search online for Techno Tuesday Amsterdam, if you are looking for some mid-week action. Also look up Cheeky Monday Amsterdam, to start your week with a bang.

There are two pub crawl options, running seven nights per week. One is in the Red Light, district starting at Players club in Warmoes Street (click here to see the price). Be there between 8 and 9h30pm. Fair warning: this isn’t a pickup club at all.

The other, nicer pub crawl option is at the Leidseplein (starting at Candela Bar between 8h30pm and 9h45pm). You’ll visit a few touristic bars. It’s not the best pub crawl, but still worthwhile if you feel bored or alone at night. The online price is the same as the price they charge on the ground in Amsterdam. Click through to GetYourGuide to reserve your spot.

The final option would be my own personal choice if it was my first time in Amsterdam: Get both pub crawls together for a very nice price. Even if these pubcrawls aren’t the best “clubbing experience”, you can still meet very good friends this way.

On the other hand, if you’re really on a tight budget, the free option is to use the Couchsurfing Hangouts app to make new friends to party with. Go and have pre-drinks at e.g. the Beer Temple.

Update : For 2023, you can now save a lot of money by reserving a 2 or 7-day all-access Amsterdam nightlife pass at GetYourGuide. There’s more than 20 nightclubs and bars included in the pass. Plus, there’s no risk in using the above link, since you can cancel your pass up to 24 hours beforehand.

To conclude the nightlife section, due to all the above-mentioned restraints, e.g. bad gender ratios at many of the bars, and the fact that Amsterdam is not the most Dutch city anymore, nightgame is not the best. However, since the clubbing scene is multicultural: By gaming hard, you’re bound to find a keen girl from some exotic country.

Legal Highs

If you’re into cannabis, Amsterdam will probably be like heaven to you. I don’t smoke pot, but there are Coffee shops where you can smoke a joint or eat cannabis-containing foods. Plus, there are the Headshops – where you can buy pot or marijuana containing products to smoke or eat at home. While at the Smartshops, you can find almost any medicinal plant which may have been banned in other countries. Magic Truffles (or Magic Mushroom grow-at-home kits) are the most famous forbidden plant.

Accommodation

Recently, serious government restrictions have been introduced against Airbnb rentals in Amsterdam, to curb over-tourism. Since Airbnb tourists account for only around 4% of all visitors to Amsterdam, it doesn’t make much sense. Either way, it will be cheaper to check out the below hostel recommendations.

St Christopher Hostel is very central, with spacious dorms, while beds have privacy curtains. Although you could illegally sneak in female guests, the bunk beds are of the type that sways back and forth if you would do anything other than sleep in your bed. Thus it’s not that great an idea.

The Bulldog hostel in the Red Light District, only has larger dorms, e.g. 8 bed and 12 bed. Thus I’d rather avoid it. The bar also wasn’t good.

The Generator hostels are usually a good choice for getting a comfortable dorm bed in a social environment, but the location of the Generator in Amsterdam isn’t that great.

The Flying Pig Uptown, close to Leidseplein, is a decent hostel. With a nice small bar on the bottom floor that can get crowded, and in a good location close to the Leidseplein nightlife street. However, it’s an old building, thus somewhat cramped with no elevator. Also check out the Flying Pig Downtown close to the Central Station and Red Light District.

I most recently had a great time staying in ClinkNoord for a few days. Thus this is my top hostel recommendation for Amsterdam in the 2019/2020 season (very central, new modern building, and good common rooms).

Conclusion

It’s worth visiting Amsterdam as a tourist. However, you don’t see that many Dutch people around anymore in the heart of the city. If I had to choose, I’d rather live in Utrecht. There are cuter Dutch girls strolling the streets. Cities like Rotterdam (with its futuristic architecture) and Den Haag (with Scheveningen Beach) have fallen to mass immigration.

For now, Amsterdam is a cool place to visit for a few days. I wish you a good time, but don’t stay too long lest your soul get corrupted.

Maastricht / Nijmegen / Utrecht (2019 Update)

I visited Maastricht, a small city in the southernmost part of Netherlands in Winter 2019. I wouldn’t want to live in Maastricht, unless I have a well-paying job over there. Here’s why..

The city center has a nice warm vibe with traditional architecture and modern shops. However, daygame can be extremely quiet. After 5pm its better, but if you consider that it gets dark in Winter before 5pm, then there’s not many daygame opportunities. Summer will be more vibrant.

There is a small nightlife street (Platiel Straat) which gets busy around midnight on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Of course, there are also the usual options for online dating. In Europe, even the small towns are not that bad.

Still, why live in a small town, if you could live in e.g. Utrecht or Amsterdam instead …where there are simply much more going on. Maastricht is quite far away from Amsterdam (3 hours) in a country that’s otherwise well interconnected by train. It’s like a tiny miniature version of Amsterdam and Utrecht, without the tourists.

Nijmegen is a student town, not far from Amsterdam by train. There’s really nothing special about this city whatsoever. Its another small town, but as with Maastricht, the small towns in Netherlands still have some very good talent, if you know what I mean. Maastricht had a slightly more warm appeal than Nijmegen. But still, neither of these two cities come close to Amsterdam or Utrecht. Maastricht has better tourist accommodation than Nijmegen as well (Green Elephant Hostel).

In addition, I spend a few more days in Utrecht in 2019. I realized that there’s isn’t that much to do for tourists in Utrecht. You’ll get bored after 3 or 4 days. Yet, it could be a really fun place to live if you have a job or business over there. My previous excitement for Utrecht was mostly because I love the area around the very central StayOkay Hostel (plenty of attractive women around). However, on the other side of the railway station, there are also less flattering neighborhoods like Lombok.

Lastly, I spend a few more days in Amsterdam as well. All my conclusions remain the same. For tourism (not dating specifically), its as usual fun to visit. Biggest drawback is that you’re mostly limited to staying in hostels.

  1. Don’t come to Amsterdam for sex. It’s one of the worst cities when it comes to that purpose. Dutch girls mostly date Dutch guys and are very tired of foreigners (not too mention tourists). I have a good game overall and I’ve never experienced such difficulties like in NL.
What’s written about femininity is also true. Dutch girls dress horribly and can be quite aggressive.
Very disappointing.. I’d stay away from NL and focus on South East Asia instead.

    • Yeah, you make very good points. Even though you can potentially “get lucky” or “get laid” anywhere (except Saudi Arabia may be a problem), don’t come to Amsterdam specifically for sex.

    • With regards to the tourism experience, your expectations can be high.

But with regards to pickup, it’s still fun to try your luck, but without massive expectations.

    • Two suggestions: Start an English blog, where you can upload photos of your travels. It may help you get local accommodation.
Secondly, the best suggestion by far is to join Couchsurfing. Create a profile there and upload photos. Let the potential host see what you’re about, your interests, & some social photos of you and/or your family/friends. Couchsurfing is a not-for-profit company. Thus, I have no hesitation in promoting them. If you can, support them by also e.g. purchasing premium memberships.

      Good luck either way.
